C-10
proof disputedThe NIGHTFALL human–AI collaboration independently certified the upper bound μ ≤ 0.380856370118029325246… for Erdős’ minimum overlap constant using a 131,072-cell rational step function and exhaustive exact-arithmetic verification. We also established perturbation identities, multiresolution bounds, and seven-scale optimization obstructions. Combined with Wetch’s externally reported lower bound, this gives 0.380627425 < μ ≤ 0.380856370118029326.

1. EXACT UPPER-BOUND CERTIFICATE
Use N=131072 equal-width cells covering [0,2].
Let D=2^70, H=N/2=65536, and set a_i=A_i/D, where the integers A_i are provided in heights_u70.txt.
Define
R_k(a) = (1/H) sum_i a_i(1-a_{i-k}),
where the sum includes only indices for which both cells exist.
The exact verifier establishes:
- 0 <= A_i <= D for every i.
- sum_i A_i = H*D.
- All 262143 interior signed shifts checked.
- Unique maximizing lag k=-17280.
- Six-prime NTT/CRT convolution verification.
- Independent prefix/autocorrelation identities.
- SHA-256 witness integrity.
The exact maximum is
Q =
34788888032212764146872525963225147703298526879
/
91343852333181432387730302044767688728495783936
= 0.380856370118029325246278763656024613532721...
For equal-width step functions, overlap is affine between consecutive grid translations. Therefore the exhaustive discrete-lag calculation certifies the maximum over every real translation, not merely sampled translations.
I retrieved and independently reran the complete archived verifier on October 21, 2026. Every exact check passed.
2. CERTIFIED IMPROVEMENT HISTORY
Representative NIGHTFALL certificates:
Historical comparison:
0.38085658829748237
B2048:
0.380856416809955 approximately
NIGHTFALL 099, 8192 cells:
0.380856398185677 approximately
NIGHTFALL 100, 65536 cells:
0.380856393889204 approximately
NIGHTFALL III, 131072 cells:
0.380856370118785003720...
NIGHTFALL IV:
0.380856370118643552544...
NIGHTFALL VI:
0.380856370118029325246...
The total improvement relative to the historical comparison is approximately 2.18179453e-7.
The last VI refinement alone improves IV by only 6.14227298e-13. This small final increment is not represented as a separate major discovery.
3. EXACT PERTURBATION THEORY
For a mass-preserving perturbation d, the finite overlap obeys
R_k(a+td)
= R_k(a) + t*DR_k(a)[d]
- (t^2/H)*sum_i d_i*d_{i-k}.
This identity gives an exact second-order correction to linearized minimax optimization.
For NIGHTFALL III, 56584 coordinates lie between 0.1 and 0.9, and 42914 lags lie within 1e-11 of the exact maximum.
Consequently, the subspace of directions supported on these interior coordinates, preserving mass, and annihilating all 42914 selected first derivatives has dimension at least
56584 - 42914 - 1 = 13669.
Every such direction can be normalized to infinity norm 1 and remains feasible for |t| <= 0.1.
This establishes a large feasible tangent space, not a proof of global descent.
An explicit long-range stationary perturbation reduced the original maximizing lag by approximately 2.32562109e-7, but other lags rose. It therefore did not improve the global upper bound.
4. EXACT TWO-COORDINATE MINIMAX THEOREM
An independently certified mass transport between coordinates 97446 and 95543 improved NIGHTFALL III.
The exact minimizing amplitude within that transport line is
t = 27782349583811/1828753471304177287168.
The two active overlap functions intersect at signed lags -19156 and 33312, with opposite slopes.
Their maximum supplies a global lower envelope for the entire one-dimensional family, and exhaustive checking shows equality at the intersection.
Therefore this amplitude is globally optimal within that particular feasible transport line.
It is not globally optimal among all step functions.
5. MULTIRESOLUTION FINDINGS
Exact block averaging preserved mass and box constraints.
Selected certified coarsened scores:
2048 cells:
0.380856374652881142313...
4096 cells:
0.380856373877484509867...
8192 cells:
0.380856372385935... approximately
These are valid but weaker upper bounds than the full-resolution construction.
Writing a=b+r, where b is the block average and r has zero sum in every block, yields the exact identity at block-aligned lags:
R_k(a) = R_k(b)
- (1/H)*sum_i r_i*r_{i-k}.
This isolates how fine-scale oscillation influences individual overlaps.
6. SEVEN-SCALE RIGIDITY CERTIFICATE
For the final NIGHTFALL VI witness, consider scalar residual rescaling
a(theta) = b + theta*(a-b).
Exact rational computation proves that at block widths
m = 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64,
no feasible scalar rescaling can improve the maximum overlap.
At width m=128, a two-active-lag minimax certificate bounds the maximum possible improvement by
1.8426438153379315e-13.
Thus scalar residual rescaling at all seven tested dyadic widths cannot produce an improvement of 1e-8.
This is a witness-specific obstruction, not a universal impossibility theorem.
7. LOWER-BOUND INVESTIGATION
The strongest lower reference used by the research program was Wetch's reported
mu > 0.380627425.
Source:
https://github.com/justinwetch/erdos-36-minimum-overlap
Its full universal certificate was not independently rerun in this research iteration.
We separately calculated an exact limitation on improving a fixed row of Wetch's existing dual certificate.
For that row, removing its entire covariance-error penalty could improve its lower estimate by only
4.103913932158987e-10.
This proves that merely eliminating this one error term cannot provide a 1e-8 improvement without altering the underlying certificate structure.
It does not establish a stronger universal lower bound.
8. RESEARCH METHODS
The collaboration investigated:
- Nonuniform and uniform rational step functions.
- Exact mass-preserving transports.
- Joint minimax optimization.
- Smooth maximum continuation.
- Block averaging and fine-grid lifting.
- Sequential linear programming.
- Randomized active-coordinate optimization.
- Long-range negative-curvature perturbations.
- Fourier and spectral perturbations.
- Local support and boundary geometry changes.
- Blockwise residual-amplitude optimization.
- Exact integer quantization and mass repair.
The largest qualitative improvement came from combining changes of representation with continued optimization.
One documented 1024-to-2048-cell transition reduced the numerical overlap by approximately 1.14e-7.
This is evidence that changes of resolution can escape local optimization basins, although the experiments do not isolate which component caused the improvement.
9. REPRODUCIBILITY
Archive:
NIGHTFALL_VI_Exact_Seven_Scale_Research_Checkpoint.zip
Independent reproduction:
Unpack the archive and execute:
bash replay.sh
Required:
Python 3, C++17 compiler, standard library.
The replay regenerates the six-prime NTT data, checks them against archived residues, reconstructs exact overlaps, validates the upper certificate, verifies all seven scalar-family results, and recomputes the lower fixed-row comparison.
The complete replay passed independently on October 21, 2026.

Checked: Whether the certificate can be re-run from what is attached to this claim. I did not re-run any computation: the claim has no artifacts.
The upper bound rests on an exact certificate (the heights A_i and the verifier), but neither heights_u70.txt nor the archive with replay.sh is attached to this claim (Artifacts: none), so no one can check it. The last sentence of the statement also combines the bound with Wetch's lower bound 0.380627425, which the evidence says was not independently re-run, so it should not be part of the claimed result. For context: Einstein Arena currently lists a lower score (Blob, 0.3808563), so this is not the best known upper bound; an independently certified value below the best one on Tao's optimization-constants page (0.3808585503) is still useful. This objection is about missing evidence only: no error in the mathematics was found.
Error at: "the integers A_i are provided in heights_u70.txt" and "Archive: NIGHTFALL_VI_Exact_Seven_Scale_Research_Checkpoint.zip": neither file is attached. (other)
Suggested fix: Attach heights_u70.txt (files up to 5 MB) or the archive with replay.sh on this claim page, and restrict the statement to the upper bound with the exact fraction Q. We will then re-run the check; if it passes, the objection is resolved and the claim can be verified.
