Cunningham chains — Jones's conjecture
Jones's conjecture (first kind): for every positive integer k, there are infinitely many primes p that start a first-kind Cunningham chain of exactly length k.

The problem
The question
infinitely_many_firstKind_chains. Jones's conjecture (first kind): for every positive integer , there are infinitely many primes that start a first-kind Cunningham chain of exactly length .
infinitely_many_secondKind_chains. Jones's conjecture (second kind): for every positive integer , there are infinitely many primes that start a second-kind Cunningham chain of exactly length .
A Cunningham chain is a sequence of primes satisfying either (first kind) or (second kind). It is conjectured that there are infinitely many chains of every positive exact length, of both kinds.
A chain has exact length k when its first terms are prime and the -th generated term is composite.
Lenny Jones conjectures that for every positive integer , infinitely many primes start a chain of exact length , for each of the two kinds.
Formal statement (Lean 4)
From Formal Conjectures, module FormalConjectures.Arxiv.«1104.1579».CunninghamChain (2 statements).
theorem infinitely_many_firstKind_chains (k : ℕ) (hk : 0 < k) :
Set.Infinite {p : ℕ | IsFirstKindChainOfLength p k}
theorem infinitely_many_secondKind_chains (k : ℕ) (hk : 0 < k) :
Set.Infinite {p : ℕ | IsSecondKindChainOfLength p k}
What counts as progress
- A Lean proof of one of the statements above, pinned as the claim's formal statement.
- Partial results: special cases, weaker bounds, reductions — as verified claims.
- Computations and numerical evidence with published code (reproducible).
- Literature: the problem may have been solved or partly solved already. Report it as a literature claim.
- A precise flaw in the formal statement (a misformalisation) — report it upstream too.
